Vietnam has quietly become an important regional power in Asia with an emerging economy backed by a young population of approximately one hundred million people. After a long history of resisting foreign control, Vietnam now promotes tourism and seeks international investment to improve its infrastructure and visitor amenities. The region of Central Vietnam has been at the forefront of these efforts. Many important international conferences have been held at the modern seaside city of Danang. Danang and the preserved World Heritage sites of Hoi An village and the former imperial capital city of Hue provide an excellent introduction to Vietnamese culture and history. The family run tour company established by Man Nguyen has developed popular guided tours which highlight these attractions and bring guests into the countryside to experience local life and meet the friendly people of Vietnam.

Tours, Sites and Activities

Man Nguyen Private Tours offers private transportation, guide services and cruise ship excursions throughout Central Vietnam. They also coordinate tours visiting the central Highlands area and other cities in North and South Vietnam. The most popular tour selected by guests is called " All the Sites of Hoi and Danang in 10 Hours". Visitors with more time to spend and an interest in history will enjoy a day trip to Hue via the scenic Hai Van pass to see Hue City including the imperial citadel there by land and the famous Royal tombs along the Perfume River by dragon boat.

The company provides flexible private itineraries which are customized to meet client preferences. After greeting guests at the airport and escorting them to their hotel, the adventures begin. For a countryside experience, the company offers a variety of activities such as bicycling on beautiful Can Kim Island, rowing on one of Vietnam's iconic basket boats, taking a local food tour, see rice paper made in a backyard shop, or making a conical hat. Other cultural experiences are available in picturesque Hoi An which served as a gateway to the world for Vietnam during the colonial era. Some guests spend a day or two enjoying the restaurants of Hoi An which offer Asian fusion, Vietnamese dishes, and French cuisine, along with shopping for local wares or watching the popular nighttime lantern ceremonies. Man Nguyen has developed an evocative late afternoon boat trip for guests on the rivers of Hoi An topped off with a beautiful sunset and a freshly prepared barbecue.

Background and Experience

Man Nguyen has been working as a tour guide for ten years. He became interested in the field because of a desire to “introduce my country to worldwide English-speaking travelers focusing on its culture, people, history and food.” Each of the company’s guides are university educated in English and have been individually licensed and tested to work in international tourism. The company is proud of the recognitions it has received from various travel services and notes that it is a member of the government’s visitor compensation system.

Man Nguyen states that his company strives to exceed guest expectations by careful planning for each tour and in several other ways. “We operate on a strict non-commission policy which means there are no shopping outlets or similar stops included in an itinerary unless requested by the guest. We also offer our guests flexible payment methods including cash (which is still widely used in Vietnam), credit card, or PayPal for bank deposits.”

Family Experience with Man Nguyen Private Vietnam Tour

My wife and I used Man Nguyen Private Vietnam Tours during a five-day trip to Central Vietnam where we stayed at a resort on the beach in Danang. Man Nguyen was able to assign one of its experienced guides, Tuan, to take us on an excellent series of excursions tailored to our interests. In addition to seeing the major sites in Danang and Hue, we visited the Japanese bridge, historic houses, renowned temples, and canals of Hoi An, and had meals there. I also went on a full day trip to the countryside with Tuan which began with seeing the temple ruins of the Champa city of My Son Sanctuary built in the jungle by Hindu kings from the 4th to 14th century, and continued with bike riding through the rice paddies of Can Kim Island, paddling around the lagoon in a basket boat, and walking past modern resorts on Non Nuoc Beach in Danang.

By spending an extended time with one guide like Tuan, we had the opportunity to learn about daily life for the younger generations of Vietnamese and exchange stories about our own experiences. One thing you frequently hear in modern Vietnam is that people have moved on from the country’s past conflicts with the United States, France, and China, and are now focused on finding a better future. They are interested in American culture and consumer goods. In addition, the society’s reverence for adults was also evident in Tuan’s politeness and the assistance he provided to my wife in crossing the busy streets of the cities and finding suitable seats for us in the tea shops and stores we visited together. We left not only feeling we had enjoyed a meaningful snapshot of Vietnam, but also made a friend.
