The Story of the Traveling American

When I was young, I enjoyed visiting my grandparents’ house in Norwich, Connecticut and reading through the stacks of National Geographic magazines on their back porch. Pictures of ancient ruins, faraway people, and natural wonders intrigued me, and I hoped to be able to see them for myself someday. For many years, that did not happen. With a young family and a busy professional practice, our getaways were to places like Disney World, New York City and the Caribbean. In 2002, however, our family crossed the Atlantic for the first time and we took a ten-day European cruise from Rome to Barcelona.

" I can never forget climbing down a shaft into a collapsed pyramid with a torch accompanied by my son and our guide in Saqqara, Egypt, to see a 4000-year old empty treasure room and a pharaoh’s broken sarcophagus."

Traveling the World and the United States

Since that time, we have been fortunate to visit more than 60 countries and explore some of the world’s most exotic sites as well as interesting places in our nation. I can never forget climbing down a shaft into a collapsed pyramid with a torch accompanied by my son Christopher and our guide in Saqqara, Egypt, to see a pharaoh’s broken sarcophagus and a 4000-year old empty treasure room. Or viewing thousands of Terra Cotta Warriors that were buried by Emperor Qin in 220 B.C. to guard his tomb near Xi’an, China. Or riding a horse through the desert outside Sedona, Arizona, where the red rocks and cactus make you feel like a lawman in a Clint Eastwood movie.

By reading extensively about countries in advance and arranging for our own guides, we were able to visit many interesting places, and learn about the people, culture and history of different nations. After hearing about our travels, the Day newspaper of New London, Connecticut, asked me to share some of our more interesting experiences with its readers in a series of articles in 2016.

EPIC Destinations

Those stories and other experiences I have had traveling the world in recent years led to the publication of my first travel book “EPIC Destinations” which has been distributed to more than 1000 people at local schools and community gatherings. My goal with the book was to present both familiar and unknown places around the world, while conveying to friends and particularly young people the sense of excitement and understanding that results from experiencing new places and different cultures.

During travel presentations, people frequently ask me questions about how to plan a trip. Most people feel helpless when they try to decide where to go for a reasonable price and how to get there without constant stress. Those questions led me to think about launching a new kind of travel website.
