Gloria Serenity Resort Combines Modernity with Turkish Delights

Several years ago, Turkey hosted the G-20 meeting of leaders from the 20 leading economies of the world. They held it at Belek which is a coastal resort area on the Mediterranean east of the large city of Antalya. While not well known in the United States, Belek has several dozen huge resorts that are frequented by sometimes demanding guests from Russia, Germany, and Turkey.

Amenities

We stayed at the modern Gloria Serenity Resort in Belek for four nights several years ago since it provides a central location for visiting the many historical sites and renowned beaches of the Turquoise Coast of Antalya. Some people find the resorts in Belek to be a bit overwhelming since they are large complexes, full of glass and lights, which attract large family gatherings and sometimes boisterous groups. But there are enough personal touches and professional service at the Gloria Serenity to allow you to join in or relax depending on your mood. 

The hotel’s amenities did not disappoint. The landmark feature of the resort is that the ground floor rooms open onto a wide lateral pool that encircles the entire complex.  So, you can lounge at your room and plunge in for a swim or paddle up to a nearby bar for a cool drink. The rooms are modern with large bathrooms and relaxing furnishings. Dining options include Asian Fusion, Turkish and continental cuisine with surroundings that range from fish tanks to oriental screens.

Another unusual feature of the hotel is the open-air theater which it shares with the hotel next door. Every night there was a musical show or other type of performance presented in Russian. We saw an unusual acrobatic and gymnastic show by the Moscow Children’s Circus which was entertaining in any language. Other recreation and entertainment options available at the hotel include spa services, a golf course, tennis courts and children’s programs.

Area Activities 

The area around Belek has been at the crossroads of empires for millennia so a variety of historic settings and ruins are nearby.  Some well-known sites include the mountaintop city of Termessos, Olympos and Perge. The Roman amphitheater at Aspendos still hosts international performers. The canyon and waterfall at Duden which empties out into the sea is a popular family outing.

Location 

Belek is located about a half hour east of the major city of Antalya.  While Turkey’s road system has improved dramatically in the past decade, it is not a very convenient drive from anywhere unless you are touring other places in the area such as the travertine springs at Pamukkale or hiking the Lycian Way along the coastline. Most visitors fly in from Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, or from Moscow and several European capitals that offer international service.
