The southern coastline of California running from Malibu in the north to Newport Beach in the south has been attracting new residents and dreamers since the late 19th century. One community that embodies the creative spirit and cultural diversity of the region is Santa Monica. This independent municipality surrounded on three sides by Los Angeles has experienced considerable change over the years but remains an attractive place for visitors seeking a sample of California lifestyle.
History
Santa Monica was originally a small settlement controlled by several Mexican American ranchers. After the Gold Rush and the transcontinental railroad brought thousands of people to California during the 19th century, investors like Colonel Robert Baker and Nevada U.S. Senator John P. Jones bought up most of the land and waterfront. They began to sell residential lots in the newly created town of Santa Monica in 1875, and then built rail connections and port facilities in the city with the hope of creating the West Coast’s major shipping port there. While Santa Monica eventually lost out to San Pedro Bay, the beachfront areas and adjoining land attracted people seeking a comfortable place to live or a bungalow by the bay. By the 1920s, numerous hotels and entertainment venues like the Santa Monica Pier and a public bathhouse had been built along with commercial enterprises like Douglas Aircraft, turning the town into one of Los Angeles's most prominent communities.
Things to do in Santa Monica
Santa Monica Pier- The most popular attraction in Santa Monica is the Santa Monica Pier which was originally constructed in 1909 and repaired and expanded on several occasions thereafter. It can be reached by proceeding down a ramp connected to Ocean Avenue which is the main thoroughfare along the beach. The pier extends almost a half mile out into the Pacific and holds a small amusement park called Pacific Park. The amusement park has 12 rides including a roller coaster and a Ferris wheel. There is also a large arcade featuring 14 old-fashioned games of chance and skill such as basketball shooting and air rifles. One of the landmark features of the Pier is a beautiful carousel building known as the 1922 Pier Carousel with finally crafted horses and sleighs known as the which has been used as backdrop for many Hollywood scenes.
Sports Fishing and Boating- Santa Monica is one of the best locations in the region for boating and sports fishing. In addition to the Pier, which is popular with both serious and casual fishermen, numerous companies offer charter excursions into Santa Moncia Bay and the Pacific. The city’s proximity to Marina Bay Ray which is North America’s largest man-made small craft harbor further enhances its maritime tradition. Approximately 5,000 yachts, powerboats, and sailing craft are berthed there.
Third Street Promenade and Brentwood Country Mart- Another feature of Santa Monica is its quality retail and entertainment offerings. The best-known location is the Third Street Promenade which is a four block long, pedestrian shopping area located close to the beach. There are several hundred retailers in the area with stores like Patagonia, Lululemon, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, and specialty stores selling everything from children’s toys, pickleball equipment, and imported foods. Quality dining, entertainment, and movie facilities round out the attractions there. Another popular destination located several miles inland is the Brentwood Country Mart. Known for its red board architecture and laid out with food venues, shops, and stalls arranged around a central courtyard like a country marketplace, the Country Mart opened in 1948 and has remained popular for generations with Hollywood stars and other celebrities.
When to Go - The weather in southern California is generally great except from December to February when it can be a bit chilly, and during May when the weather is frequently cloudy and sometimes foggy. Nevertheless, most beachfront activities are open year-round, and the temperature remains in the 50s and 60s during that time. Santa Monica is far enough away from the hillsides and canyons to avoid the wildfires or landslides that sometimes trouble the region.
How to Get Here - There are direct flights to Los Angeles International Airport from all over the United States including on moderately priced carriers such as JetBlue, Southwest, and Alaskan. It is a short and relatively inexpensive cab ride from the airport to Santa Monica.
Where to Stay – The multiple hotel options near the Pier on Ocean Avenue and the friendly atmosphere of Santa Monica during the evenings make it the best place to stay. The Shore Hotel is a moderately priced and very modern looking boutique hotel on Ocean Avenue which has stylish rooms, an eco-friendly design, and an excellent pool and cafe.
Cost- There is no charge for admission to the Santa Monica Pier or the Third Street Promenade. The amusements on the Pier are somewhat expensive for each ride but the carousel is worth a ride as a romantic interlude or as an experience that children will long remember.
